Official Import Rules
Australia has the strictest pet import regulations in the world. Cats must arrive as manifest cargo via Melbourne International Airport only.
Requirements include: DAFF import permit, ISO microchip, rabies vaccination (Group 3 countries), FAVN titer test (≥0. 5 IU/ml), 180-day waiting period (calculated from the date the blood sample arrives at the testing laboratory), identity verification by a competent authority, government-endorsed health certificate, and mandatory quarantine at the Mickleham PEQ Facility (minimum 10 days if optional competent-authority identity verification was completed before blood draw, or 30 days otherwise).
IMPORTANT: Cats originating from non-approved countries (including Thailand, China, Indonesia, most of SE Asia) are not eligible for direct import to Australia. However, they may be eligible for import if they have been continuously resident in an approved Group 1, 2, or 3 country for at least 180 consecutive days immediately before export, and meet all other applicable import conditions for that approved country. Bengal cats are completely banned from import as of 1 March 2026. No exceptions remain.
Medical Roadmap
Microchip
ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip required before rabies vaccination.
Rabies vaccination
Administered at least 30 days before blood draw.
FAVN Titer Test
Blood drawn at least 30 days post-vaccination. Lab results take 2–3 weeks. The 180-day waiting period is calculated from the date the blood sample arrives at the testing laboratory, not from when the result is received. The RNATT is valid for 12 months from the date of blood sample collection.
Waiting period
Minimum 180 days from the date the blood sample arrives at the testing laboratory.
Health certificate
Issued by an accredited vet and endorsed by an official government veterinarian employed by the competent authority of the approved country of export within 5 days before the cat's date of export. Endorsement cannot occur before the final veterinary health check and second internal parasite treatment have been completed.

Quarantine Information
MANDATORY quarantine at the Mickleham PEQ Facility near Melbourne. For Group 3 countries, the default minimum period is 30 days. This can only be reduced to a minimum of 10 days if the optional competent-authority identity verification step was completed before blood was drawn for the RNATT. Without that identity check, 30 days is mandatory. Both the 10-day and 30-day periods can be extended if biosecurity issues arise. Quarantine costs approximately AUD $2,000 for 10 days. The facility is government-operated with dedicated animal handlers.
City & Housing Tips
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth are all very cat-friendly cities. Australia has a strong culture of responsible cat ownership — many councils have cat curfew laws (cats must be indoors overnight). Rental availability for pet owners varies — use platforms like Flatmates.com.au and Domain with pet-friendly filters. Registration with your local council is mandatory in most states.
Vets & Common Parasites
Australia has excellent veterinary care. Most suburban areas have multiple vet practices. Emergency 24-hour clinics are available in major cities. Common parasites: fleas (year-round), ticks (particularly the paralysis tick in QLD and NSW — potentially fatal), and intestinal worms. Year-round parasite prevention is essential. Australia also has unique risks: snake bites, spider bites, and heat stress.

Exiting Australia with a cat requires an export permit from DAFF and compliance with the destination country's import requirements. The process is complex — work with a licensed pet transport agent. Australia requires specific pre-export treatments and documentation depending on the destination.
