About This Route
DFDS is one of northern Europe's largest ferry companies with 9 passenger routes. Pet-friendly cabins are available on the Newcastle–Amsterdam route (4-berth sea-view rooms accommodating up to 2 medium pets). On UK–France short crossings, pets travel in vehicles or kennels. The Newhaven–Dieppe route is uniquely important: it's the only UK–France ferry that allows foot passengers to bring pets (in a suitable carrier). Scandinavian and Baltic routes offer pet cabins on select vessels.
Cat Travel Details
Pet Fee
£15–30 per pet each way depending on route. Pet-friendly cabins on Newcastle–Amsterdam: £30 per pet supplement
Cat Notes
Cats must be in a secure carrier on all routes. On the Newcastle–Amsterdam overnight crossing, pet cabins allow cats to travel in comfort alongside their owners. On Dover–Calais/Dunkirk, cats stay in the vehicle. The Newhaven–Dieppe route accepts foot passengers with crated pets — unique among UK–France ferries.
Booking
Register pets in advance at time of booking. Pet cabins and kennels have limited availability. On short Channel crossings, pets in vehicles just need to be declared.
Pro Tip
The Newcastle–Amsterdam overnight route with a pet cabin is excellent for a stress-free crossing with your cat — far calmer than a short Channel dash. For foot passengers without a car, the Newhaven–Dieppe route is your only UK–France option. On Channel crossings, your cat stays in the car — park near the ventilation shaft if possible.
Restrictions
On UK–France routes, pets not allowed in public areas — must remain in vehicle. Kennels only available on Newhaven–Dieppe route. Pet-friendly cabins only on Newcastle–Amsterdam and select Scandinavian routes.
