Brittany Ferries

UK ↔ France (Portsmouth, Poole, Plymouth to Caen, St Malo, Cherbourg, Roscoff, Le Havre) · UK ↔ Spain (Portsmouth/Plymouth to Santander/Bilbao) · Ireland ↔ France/Spain

About This Route

Brittany Ferries is one of the most cat-friendly ferry operators in Europe. They are an approved PETS scheme carrier for dogs, cats and ferrets. Depending on your route and vessel, your cat can travel in your vehicle, in an onboard kennel, or in a dedicated pet-friendly cabin where you stay together. Pet-friendly cabins feature laminate flooring and air conditioning. Pet promenades and exercise areas are available on many ships. A pet travel pre-check service 96 hours before departure confirms your documentation is correct.

Cat Travel Details

Pet Fee

From £35 one-way to France / £50 one-way to Spain. Pet-friendly cabins cost more than standard cabins.

Cat Notes

Cats should travel in a secure carrier. In vehicles, ensure adequate ventilation and water. In pet-friendly cabins, cats can be out of the carrier. Dogs must be muzzled outside vehicles/cabins but this doesn't apply to cats. All cats need EU Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate, microchip, and rabies vaccination.

Booking

Book pets at time of trip booking — do not leave it until departure day. Pet-friendly cabins have limited availability. Complete the online pet travel pre-check 96 hours before sailing.

Pro Tip

The pet-friendly cabin option is ideal for cats — your cat stays with you in a proper cabin rather than in the car deck. If your cat is nervous, the cabin provides a calm, quiet space. For UK→Spain routes (24+ hours), a cabin is strongly recommended over leaving your cat in the vehicle. Bring familiar bedding and a litter tray for cabin crossings.

Restrictions

Pets not allowed in public areas or on passenger decks (except designated exercise areas). Pets in vehicles must be visited during the crossing. In very cold weather, Brittany Ferries may not be able to accommodate pets in vehicles.
