Official Import Rules

Mexico requires an international health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, current rabies vaccination (at least 30 days old), and proof of internal/external parasite treatment. A SENASICA import permit is NOT required for cats (only for dogs).

Cats are inspected by SENASICA officials at the port of entry. Maximum 3 pets per person without commercial documentation.

None. Mexico does not quarantine cats from any country provided documentation is in order.

City & Housing Tips

Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Miguel de Allende, and Mérida are popular with expat cat owners. Mexico has a very cat-friendly culture. Pet-friendly rentals are abundant, especially in expat-heavy areas. Vet care is affordable — a standard consultation costs MXN 300-600.

Vets & Common Parasites

Good veterinary care in major cities at very affordable prices. 24-hour emergency clinics available in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey. Common parasites: fleas, ticks, and intestinal worms (year-round). Keep cats indoor/outdoor with flea prevention.

Exit Rules — Leaving Mexico

Exiting Mexico requires compliance with destination requirements. For the US, you need a USDA-format health certificate from a Mexican veterinarian, endorsed by SENASICA (Sagarpa).
