Animal Quarantine Service (AQS) — Narita Branch
About This Facility
Japan's Animal Quarantine Service (AQS) at Narita is one of Japan's busiest pet import stations. All cats must undergo import inspection.
If all documentation is correct (microchip, rabies vaccination, FAVN titer test ≥0. 5 IU/ml, 180-day waiting period), quarantine inspection takes less than 12 hours.
If requirements are not met, cats face detention quarantine of up to 180 days at the owner's expense.
Physical Arrival Directions
The AQS office is within Narita Airport.
After landing, proceed to the AQS counter in the customs area.
For cargo arrivals, pets are held at the AQS detention facility near the cargo terminal.
Practical Tips & What to Expect
Submit Advance Notification to AQS at least 40 days before arrival via NACCS or email. The 180-day wait starts when the lab receives the blood sample, not when drawn.
Narita has a caretaker company at the detention facility. Pets from 'designated regions' (Iceland, Australia, NZ, Fiji, Hawaii, Guam) have simplified requirements.
Arrive Mon–Fri 8am–5pm to avoid overtime charges.
