About This Facility

Los Angeles International Airport does not have a single centralized animal reception center like Heathrow's HARC or JFK's ARK. Instead, each airline's cargo division operates its own handling facility in the LAX cargo complex.

This can be confusing for first-time pet importers, as you need to know exactly which airline and which building to go to. The LAX cargo area is located south of the main terminal complex along World Way West.

Major cargo handlers at LAX include American Airlines Cargo, United Cargo (when operational), and various freight forwarders. For cats arriving in-cabin with a passenger, you clear CBP at the passenger terminal as normal.

Physical Arrival Directions

Unlike airports with a single centralized animal reception center, LAX cargo pet collection is handled through individual airline cargo facilities located along World Way West and the Imperial Highway cargo area. The specific building depends on which airline your cat flew on — check your Air Waybill or contact the airline's cargo division for the exact address.

From the passenger terminal, take a taxi or rideshare to the cargo area (typically 5–10 minutes drive). Most cargo facilities have their own parking lots.

Bring the AWB number, tracking information, and photo ID for collection.

Practical Tips & What to Expect

Get the exact cargo facility address from your airline or shipping agent before you arrive — navigating the LAX cargo area without specific directions can be time-consuming and frustrating. Most airline cargo offices at LAX operate during business hours (8am–5pm) with limited after-hours availability.

If your cat is arriving on a late-night flight, you may not be able to collect until the next morning. For domestic arrivals in-cabin, collection is straightforward through the normal passenger terminal.

California does not require a state-specific health certificate for cats, but always carry your veterinary documentation. LAX's cargo facilities do not have the same level of dedicated animal care as HARC or The ARK — processing is efficient but basic.
