Etihad Airways

Cargo Only Airline

Pet Policy Overview

Etihad Airways, based in Abu Dhabi, does not permit pets in the cabin. Cats and dogs travel as checked baggage on select routes or as manifest cargo via Etihad Cargo. The airline launched its PetE service specifically designed for comfortable animal transport, with climate-controlled holding facilities at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Etihad offers a useful alternative to Emirates for pet owners in the Gulf region, particularly for routes to the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

Pro Tip

Contact Etihad's Special Services team at least 72 hours before departure to arrange pet travel. The airline requires an IATA-compliant rigid crate and all destination-country documentation at check-in. For UAE residents, a MOCCAE (Ministry of Climate Change and Environment) import permit is required for incoming pets. Be aware that Abu Dhabi experiences extreme heat from June to September — avoid cargo pet transport during these months if possible, as ground temperatures can be dangerous during loading and unloading.

Restrictions

No cabin pets. Brachycephalic breeds face seasonal restrictions and may be refused during extreme heat. Pets must be at least 16 weeks old. The UAE requires a MOCCAE import permit for all arriving animals. Some routes and aircraft types do not accept live animals — confirm acceptance when booking. Transit through Abu Dhabi with a pet requires additional documentation.
